What is a URL? How to Optimize a URL for Better SEO?

What is URL?

A URL (Uniform Resource Locater) is technically a type of Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that specifies the location of a webpage. In simple words, a URL may be defined as a "wepage address" or "website address".

Example of a URL: http://www.Google.com and http://www.google.com/adwords

Types of URL

A URL may be divided in to two types and can be understood by the following examples:

1) Static URL: An example of a static URL is www.example.com/this-is-my-website-first-page. Static URL will contain only keywords and will not include any special characters.  Websites which are made only in simple HTML are the best example of a static URL. Static URLs are good for an SEO point of view.

2) Dynamic URL: An example of a Dynamic URL is www.example .com/product?id=105. Dynamic URLs will always contain special characters like?=/ etc. Websites made in PHP may be an example of  dynamic URLs. Dynamic URLs are not good for an SEO point of view.

Tips for Optimization of URL

URL optimization is one of the important factors for SEO on page activity. Even Google and other search engines are always recommending to try to make static URLs for your webpages. If you do not know how to do URL optimization for your website then the example below will be beneficial for you.

If you are designing a new website and naming your folder, then take time to name your URLs. Try to include the actual name of the product or category name in the URLs or you can use your important or related keywords in the URLs.

For example, if we have a page on the topic of ‘Mangoes are Sweet’ and it is under the ‘Fruit’ category then we can assign URL as

www.example.com/fruits/mangoes-are-sweet (Static URL).

We recommend to use a hyphen (-) in between the keywords and ignore underscore (_)

Ignore these types of URL www.example.com /product?id=567 (Dynamic URL)
www.example.com/products /567.html (Dynamic URL)

So, by assigning static URL, Google and other search engines can easily crawl your website. Simply put, we can say try to make static URL’s for your website instead of making dynamic URL’s.

The main purpose of URL optimization is that these are more searchable; Google robots can easily find your website.

If you are not technically strong and want to optimize your web pages URLs then SEOCopyKids.com will be always best option for you for making your website search engine friendly.

Basically Meta Tags are helpful in explaining web page and its content. They are not visible in the webpage as such, but present summarized information of a web site. Moreover, indirectly these tags do act as a major medium for guiding the search engines and users regarding the correct information of the website and its importance. Therefore, implementing the correct Meta Tags is a necessity for your website and this is where SEOCopyKids can assure you great accuracy and precision.

We have a skilled set of SEO Copywriter professionals who are technically updated and know exactly that which set of Meta Tags can be perfect for your website. Our expertise in placing the correct Meta Tags lies in following a comprehensive and systematic strategy for the same.

Meta Tag structure comprises of:

Title Tag: The title tag as written by our experts is short and crisp (about 65 characters in length) catering to the exact meaning of your web page. We realize its importance as this is what is visible on the search engine’s results page.

Description Tag: We showcase the exact meaning of your web page through the description tag. Having said that, we do not forget the basic motive behind Meta Tags and so do not exceed the character length to more than 200.  (Search engines recommend your meta tag must be between 150 – 200 characters and we are always making Meta description according to search engine guidelines.)

We even add an additional Meta Tag, a naming Keyword Meta Tag after considering the impact it may create in moving your web page up in the search engine rankings. This keyword Meta tag usually formulates important words that represent your web page correctly and most effectively. (In these days Meta Keywords are not important.)

Here is the complete Format of Meta Tags (Title, Description & Keywords)

<title>Title of Your Webpage<title>
<meta name= "description" content= "Description of Your Webpage"/>
<meta name= "keywords" content= "Important Keywords for Your Webpage"/>

Also, before we finalize the Meta Tags, we hold a complete and effectual research, analyzing your web page. Our main focus lies on optimization of Meta Tags. While doing this, we take care of three things:

Firstly, content of the Meta Tags. We try our best in assuring that the Tags placed fulfill the basic purpose of Search Engine Optimization and exactly match with the information & purpose of your web page.

Secondly, the characters and length of the Meta Tags is limited to what it should be. While there is no binding rule for this, we do this to make the Meta Tags effective.

Thirdly, we emphasize placing the Meta Tags correctly. The title, description and keyword Meta Tags are placed in a way that the more important ones are placed first followed by the less important ones.

Through this fixed and quality Meta tag structure, SEOCopyKids.com accomplishes the goal of providing you with superior content optimization. Google Updates October 2012

Another great recap from OrderDynamics on Google's latest changes.

During September, many businesses saw great fluctuation in their SERP rank. Several changes and updates to the Google Platforms and algorithms explain why, and how they can be used to improve business practices

Google Search
The Panda algorithm underwent three changes in September, the first taking place September 18. Google tweeted that a Panda refresh was rolling out on September 18, and that less than 0.7% of search queries would be affected.

A much greater change was Panda’s 20th algorithm update on September 28, which Google reported affected 2.4% of search queries. The next day, Google performed what is now being called the EMD Update, targeted at exact-match domain searches. Previously, a website would automatically rank higher if the domain name matched the search query; however Google noted that many exact-match results were not necessarily of very good quality. The algorithm change, which Google asserts is not related to Panda or Penguin as they are actually algorithm filters – not algorithms themselves -  is aimed at better differentiating exact-match domain search results based on the quality of the website. Matt Cutts of Google tweeted that the EMD Update would impact 0.6% of searches, but given the proximity of the Panda and EMD Updates, many are struggling to understand which of the two has actually affected their site.

On the Google Search blog, Google announced the merger of search trend tools Google Insights for Search and Google Trends into the New Google Trends. The merger was aimed at consolidating the two tools as the data rendered for both is based on search behaviour. Google reported that the featured charts and tools are now based on HTML5, so that they can be loaded on mobile devices.

Google Updates September 2012

Another great post from Canada's leading ecommerce platform provider....

August was a busy month for Google. With updates to Panda, PageRank, Analytics and AdWords, many businesses saw shifts in search engine rank and search results. Here’s what was changed, how it affected businesses, and what these changes mean moving forward.

Google Search & Panda 3.9.1
Google tweeted on August 23 about the Panda 3.9.1 update, stating “Panda data refresh this past Monday. ~1% of queries noticeably affected”.  Effectively, this meant the refresh was deployed on August 20, less than a month after the Panda 3.9 refresh on July 24. Google has not made any additional comments to elaborate on exactly what the refresh was meant to address.

On August 10, Google announced on their Inside Search Blog the implementation of a new ‘signal’ to indicate when copyrighted information is being violated. The signal has been nicknamed in the online community the ‘Emanuel Update’ after Ari Emanuel of William Morris Endeavour asserted earlier this year that Google has the ability to filter copyrighted content from search results, the same way it does with child pornography. Emanuel stated, “stealing is a bad thing, and child pornography is a bad thing”. The new signal sends copyright removal notices to Google when it suspects copyright infringement; the more notifications Google receives regarding any given website, the lower that site will rank in search results. However, this is the most Google can do to websites suspected of copyright violations; they cannot de-index sites that are repeatedly accused of copyright violations unless a copyright holder actually approaches and asks them to. Those de-indexed can submit counter-notices thereafter to petition to be re-indexed. This is the first Google update pertaining to copyright management in two years.

An unannounced change to Google Search Results has also been fueling conversation in the online community: 7-result SERPS. Search Engine Land saw the following results when Googling themselves:

On-Page SEO Checklist, Top 10 Tips

Here are 10 important on-page SEO considerations for everyone who runs a website. SEOCopyKids.com follows these simple principals when we optimize websites for our clients.

#1 Standards-Based Pages:
It is very important build your website following HTML W3C Standards which basically means your website will be read properly by a search engine and people browsing your website. A great designer isn't typically a great HTML coder. You really do need to think about the performance of your HTML pages to ensure they're error-free with lowest possible load times and that you aren't violating basic SEO rules.

#2 Page Title Tag:
This is the title of your page and one of the most important factors in SEO. Page titles should reflect the individual product you're selling. Title tags are shown in the search engine results page.

For example: 1968 Rookie Card of John Smith - Millioncards.org.

#3 Keywords:
Start thinking about your keywords right away as this will drive many of the decisions below. Pick keywords and phrases that your target customer will use to find your product. If you're using Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising, these keywords and Ads should align.

For example: 1960s Rookie Hockey Cards

#4 Page Content:
You've probably heard this a million times already but its key to a successful SEO strategy. If your pages do not have relevant content they will not service your Customers and the search engines will not rank your page effectively against your keywords.

#5 Page File Name (URL):
This is the actual html page name.

For example: millioncards.org/rookie-cards/1968-rookie-card-john-smith.html

#6 Meta Keywords Tag:
These are the most likely words or phrases that will help a customer find your product and are embedded in the HTML code.

For example: Rookie Hockey Cards, John Smith Hockey Cards, 1960s Hockey Cards.

#7 Meta Description Tag:
This a description of your pages and should be a short, 1-2 sentences (max 200-250 characters) that describes the content on the page. It is also shown in the search engines below the page title. This should briefly describe the product and be unique from the page title.

For example: Millioncards provides rare Rookie Hockey Cards for collectors or gifts for hockey fans. This John Smith Rookie Card is in mint condition and includes protective case.

#8 Anchor Text (text links):
Anchor text is very important in keyword use. This is the text found on your website that appears as a hyperlink. Anchor text should be relevant and can be used to link within your website to relevant pages.

#9 Header Tags:
Allows you to organize your pages into relevant sections by topic from the H1 Page topic header, H2 main topic, and H3 and sub topics, and so on. Headers give the search engines and understanding of where the important information is on the product page and allow you to utilize your keywords for topic areas that describe the product.

#10 Alt Image Attribute:
Alt image attributes should be used for every image on your website. Alt attributes, provide a description to the search engine about what the image is (since search engine robots cannot "see") and displayed to the user prior to loading the image. Keep these short and relevant to what the picture is illustrating.

Google Updates August 2012

Our friends at OrderDynamics, Canada's leading ecommerce provider, released this great post about the recent updates to Google. This is part of their monthly series and we will repost most of the article here, for the complete blog, OrderDynamics Google Monthly Updates August 2012.

On July 18, Google officially retired the original version of Google Analytics. While having rolled out the newer version in March 2012, users were able to switch back to the older version for some time before Google slowly began removing the option.  The new Google Analytics brings with it several new features, as well as simpler ways to use veteran features.

Multi-Channel Funnels API
Google implemented an API for their Multi-Channel Funnels feature with great interest to developers. The feature allows users to establish various metrics related to conversion, such as the most common channels and paths through a web site leading to up to sale.  Metric types include Assisted Conversions, Top Path, Path Length, Time Lag, and others. The data collected using Multi-Channel Funnels can be combined with data from other platforms to establish advanced metrics;Google’s Official Analytics blog noted how analytics company Mazeberry Express combined media expenditure with conversion path data to establish Cost per Acquisition and Return on Investment.

Real-Time
Data yielded by Analytics is now real-time, and can provide feedback on exactly what has occurred on a website thus far in a day.

Social Reports
Social Analytics allows users to track how social media activity leads to traffic and conversions to a website. Users can now tell which social networks generate the most traffic and conversions, and how social media users interact with a brand on the social network itself. Google’s Social Reports generates reports such as:

●    Social Visitor Flow
●    Off-Site Activity - Social Data Hub
●    Activity Stream
●    Social Value at a Glance
●    Assisted vs. Last Interaction Analysis
●    Multi-Channel Funnel

Mobile Reports
Mobile Reports will prove to be a game changer, offering extensive information on how consumers interact with mobile devices with respect to a brand’s website and mobile app. Users will now be able to measure the analytics of their mobile app the same way they would a regular website, geo-locate where consumers are when using their app or mobile site, and which mobile platforms work best with the brand’s app and mobile site. The feature is not exclusive to smartphones - it utilizes data from any web-enabled mobile device.

Content Experiments
This feature is not new, but has been made much simpler to use. Previously known as Google Web Optimizer, Content Experiments allows for A/B testing within Google Analytics. Content Experiments asserts that it is an improvement over its predecessor in that statistics are better analyzed by preserving data for 2 weeks before making test results available, and automatically deleting tests that run longer than 3 months. It also automatically diverts test traffic away from low performing test pages to better performing ones to preserve data from being skewed. Content Experiments is also different from Web Optimizer because the testing feature is already within analytics, whereas Web Optimizer required hacks and code implementations to link test pages to Analytics.

Remarketing
Remarketing is a feature of the Google AdWords program that automatically has a brand’s ads follow a consumer after they have visited a site. The Remarketing feature within Analytics generates reports on consumer behaviour on a site to determine their exact preferences, and the data from these reports is then sent to AdWords to allow users to tailor their Remarketing ad campaigns according to exactly what their consumers want. This feature is automatically available to anyone with an existing AdWords account linked to their Analytics.

Google Panda & Penguin
With respect to these Google Algorithms, it has been a notably quiet month. On July 24, Google Tweeted about the Panda 3.9 data refresh. The results of the refresh were low-impact, affecting only 1% of search results over 5-6 days post-refresh. It is important to note that a data refresh is not the same as an algorithm update. This, and having made an uncommon two data refreshes in June which likely rendered last month’s update relatively minor, is likely the cause of only a minimal backlash post-update. As for Penguin, it has been 9 weeks - also uncommon for Google - since the last update, and there has been no news on when to expect the next one.
